With my recent work as a substitute ag ed teacher, I have formed some new opinions about being an ag educator. The class has been really dull thus far. Part of the appeal of being in ag class means that you get to go out and do things. The only assignments I have to give at PHS are from a book. If I was a student, I would be really bored. I'm really bored as the teacher. The problem is that If I was an ag teacher, I don't think I would be doing anything different. Sure, sub plans are different than what the regular teacher would do. I understand that students cannot be trusted to behave in the same manner. I just cannot think of anything intriguing for the students to talk about. My enthusiasm for talking about ag is minimal. I first picked up on this when I was student teaching at logan elm. I was way more interested in talking about plant biology than chickens. I am looking more forward to being a science teacher than an ag teacher. Science has way more interesting topics and has a broader audience than agriculture. I enjoy doing agriculture, but I talking about ag is not fun for me. I am way more interested in talking about science. Part of my problem may be my background. My dad and grandpa are so inconsistent with their decision making, I never know if I am doing the right thing. For all the experience they brag about, so many things go wrong or are done so poorly. Calves still get away, things don't get sprayed on time, we have to haul ass to get things done before a rain gets in. With all the miscommunication I get, I can't think of a right thing to tell a student. If all the ag teacher does is straight from a book, why does anyone need an ag teaching certificate? Thats another thing, all the schools I have ag subbed at have had the same book. It's a bit odd. There is also another another thing, why do they bother with licensing? A friend of my brothers was hired without a teaching certificate. Why should I have bothered to take education classes in school when an administration doesn't require any pedagogy knowledge? Why do schools sugarcoat all the work I was doing in my education courses when I DONT NEED THEM? A teacher has those things in the back of their mind when they do their planning. I think most planning revolves around what you need to cover and how long it will take. The best plans I see as a sub are at elementary schools. A teacher at fairfield elementary had a weekly plan where all she had to do each week was write in the name of the books they were reading each day.
