I heard a good sermon today at church. The sermon was about all the types of things that the saints did and were and how they still became saints. Its good to know that the saints didn't always walk the way of God and made mistakes also. All that God really requires of his followers is to follow God with love. I don't know if I can say that without a doubt, but I am in a much better position for that than three years ago. I am in a better position than a year ago. I can't just decide that I am following with love, it would have to be more of a path than a proclamation.
In another case of holy macaroni, subbing at schools actually cost me money. Wednesday I went to the bank and got a hundred dollars in cash. Since then I bought a $22 dollar wreath, $8.50 worth of pies, $8 dollars worth of pork, gave bobby hill $20, and then I put $50 dollars in the collection basket. My wallet is emptied out and I am going to have to go get more cash for monday. I usually don't put that much in the basket, but didn't make it to church last week so felt I should double up.
In other news, I don't know what to do with myself not that I am sober more often than not. Last year, I would have gone to columbus for the buckeyes game and got drunk and passed out on my brothers couch. Now I set at home and watch movies and read. Sometimes I wait on dad and grandpa to be busy just so I have something to do. I haven't had any thing to drink since I went to the illinois game with kevin. Sobriety is healthier, but being as idle as I am is not. I could have gone to a halloween party tonight, but decided not to. I could have gone to some spaghetti fundraiser dinner, but stayed in instead. If I went out to somewhere where drinking wasn't an option, I would just get impatient and want to leave. I have gone and seen movies by myself, but prefer to go to times when I won't be seen and found out by any students or when I am expected to be home.
I also watched run fat boy run tonight. I have told myself before that it would be cool to run a marathon and hope to do it still someday. I am going to pace myself slowly and work up to the distance. 5k, 10k, half marathon, then maybe full marathon.

FX4 find
This weekend three years ago, I bought my truck. I wanted to buy a bigger truck, with a diesel engine. I knew that I was going to have to buy used, new trucks were going to be to expensive. I really had my eye on a truck in hillsboro, but dad talked me out of it. I settled on a truck I found at beechmont ford for less that 20 grand. It had the look I wanted, with the dual exhaust and larger than normal tires. If I had bought a truck without those bells and whistles, I don't know that I would have spent the money to add the features I mentioned. At any rate, the truck has been real useful here on the farm. It can pull the grain head cart, full gravity wagons, full rail wagons, and hay wagons. It is big enough to haul around five people, and doesn't get horrible mileage. It has four wheel drive, and looks good when washed up nice. It would be nice to have a crew cab and flatbed truck, but those things are going to have to wait. Most people my age look to buy a car, but I knew that I was going to be a truck driver.
At the time I was driving a SUV that I had since I was 19. I was 24 when I bought my truck. The car was a 5 speed explorer sport. My parents just recently traded it in on the cash for clunkers deal. When I traded it in, the explorer was running on 5 cylinders and had wet seats. My brother drove it somewhere, parked it and left the windows down. Then it rained big time and my seats were soaking wet. I sat on a towel on the way to school and it still soaked through to my pants a little bit.
I am getting aggravated with the radio now though. I have always used a play and dock sirius s50 radio, and occasionally play a cd in it. The radio has now decided that if a cd is not in the player when I start the truck, a disc error message flashes on my display and the player makes a spinning noise. I might get a sirius radio that does in my dash and replaces my current setup.
I am also starting to find online dating profiles laughable. All girls seem to be writing and saying the same thing. On the other hand, my profile may be predictably as laughable. I doubt anyone else is admitting to being an aspiring banjo player or saying that their work schedule depends on the weather. Those two things have very little appeal, but I like to think it is honest at the minimum. I just wonder what I have to do to stand out? Do I even want to stand out or is the girl for me one who will like what I wrote?

2 Kings
I sat down and read 2 Kings, tonight, it seemed like a good way to relax a little bit. The book was interesting but I found myself skimming over much of it. A name with several syllables was made king, sometimes before they turned 10. Somethings happened, they didn't follow Gods laws as well as could be, then their reign was over. Then it said that the certain kings activities could be found in the annals of history. I was really surprised when I finally interpreted that the israelites finally fell out of favor. Babylon was overtaken and God was fine with it. The worship of other gods was really what did it though. After all the signs and acts and Godly deeds that had been done, the people still turned to false idols. They really had it coming.
I also found a name that I wont' forget soon. Nebuchadnezzer was the leader who over took babylon. It was also a ship in the matrix that hauled neo and morpheus's crew about. The wachowski brother really did a good job with symbolism in their matrix trilogy.

thirty three and a half.
I wanted to do this post at 30 days, but let it get away from me. I have subbed 33.5 days so far this school year. Last school year it took me until november 18th to get 33 days. So I am a bit ahead of schedule from last year. This is also good news because every 120 days I get as a sub counts as a full year in the retirement system.
I also have come to a conclusion. I must way overdress for some of the places I sub at. When I student taught, I didn't have to wear a shirt and tie, and was kind of disappointed. I mentioned this to one of my teachers and he wrote back that I should have worn one anyways. I like getting a bit dressed up and out dressing the students. I would almost venture to say that I out dress most of the male staff at some of the places I go to. I seen one male teacher wearing open toed sandals before school started this morning. I don't think I have seen the principal at one building wearing a tie yet this year. I almost always wear a shirt and tie. I usually wear a sweater over top of them, but haven't quite achieved the look I was hoping for by doing that. The sweater keeps riding up and covering up my tie, which is not the look I am going for. A teacher should be dressing for the job they want. Most male teachers I see are wearing polo shirts and gym shoes. If a teacher wants to be seen as a professional they should be dressing like other professionals. Not like someone standing around on the sidelines holding a clipboard. I have always heard dress for the job you want, not the one you have.
I don't like talking about money all that much, but there is something I want to get out of my head. I have received three checks this year more for more than ten grand. I opened up one of them yesterday and it almost made me sick. I feel like I didn't do enough to warrant that amount of money. I would prefer to get my income meted out in smaller amounts. Sure, I like getting paid, but it just seem outrageous that I get some of the checks I do.

I kings
I finally got to finishing another book of the Bible. Kings was good but I found it a bit confusing. I would read about someone, think their rein was done and then read about them again. It also seemed like there were a bunch of kings at the same time. Were the kings ruling over a very large area? I didn't really keep the kingdoms sorted out, they may have been my problem. It would seem like one person was a king and then another king was talking to them, or someone would be a king for about three years then be taken over by someone. It was a bit confusing, but I'm sure the next read through will be much easier.
I also watched black snake moan tonight. I thought the movie was going to be much more perverse, but really had a good story to it. After the first half hour, the movie was not as graphic and cringe worthy as I thought it was going to be. The man who just lost what he had lived for found a cause to take up. The girl who couldn't shake a bad memory and found a bad way to put the memory away. He found her and didn't need what she thought every man wanted. She gave him a reason to put away the bad memory of his wife and move on to helping someone. The scene where he played the electric guitar and played the title song was really awesome. I should learn how to play that on my banjo.
I should be playing my banjo much more here pretty soon. When I first got my banjo, I played for an hour every day, and then would play wii for a while. Soon enough the crops will all be in and once it gets dark I won't have much to do. Maybe I can get good enough to play something recognizable by the end of the winter.

nothing seems as strange...
as when the leaves begin to change.
Seriously, my yard is about 2.5 acres big and I have about 40 tress in it. Right now my yard is just covered in leaves. My grandpa thinks the leaves are just gonna blow where I want them, but I am going to buy a leaf sweeper from TSC and see how it works. Last year I must have spent about 2 or 3 days raking leaves. No thanks.

The cycle
Just like a baseball player can hit for the cycle in a game, I have applied such a principle to substitute teaching. I have subbed for every teacher at WHS in the past year. Or at least I thought so or think so with some exceptions. The main exception would be the music teacher, I forgot about her some how. The only other teachers that I didn't sub for last year, were the first three I subbed for this year. Most of the special ed aides I didn't commit a whole day to, but did spot them all for about 2 periods for a day last year. I also subbed for the art class last year, but they have a new teacher this year. I am going to count that for now. The kids almost all know me by name now which is a bit weird. Most of the time I have to write my name on the board and how to pronounce it. HOW-KEY is how I tell them by the way.
I do have a bit of a funny story about the art teacher from last year. My senior year of high school, I didn't have a date to senior prom. I think my sister blackmailed her boyfriend into finding me a date. Since he was a whiteoak student, and didn't want to be blackmailed on prom night, he found me a date. I barely even knew what was going on. I was going to be content not going. At any rate, I was doing something at the league track meet and two girls from whiteoak came up and started asking me what I knew about said art person. I didn't have any idea what they were talking about and acted accordingly. Long story short, I had a date and she wanted as little to do with me as possible after the prom in a public place. After I took her back to her parents, then I went back home and hung out at my sisters bonfire. Someone asked me how I liked my date and I had nearly forgotten that I had one and didn't remember her name.

basketball
Basketball used to be my favorite sport to play. Up until I graduated high school, I played basketball all the time. I spent summers going to camps and shooting on the concrete court at the house. In the winter I went to practice and was a good person to have on the team. I didn't play much in any games, but I liked playing cause it was fun and kept me from doing some of the farm work. I even played a bunch when I lived in the dorms at OSU. The JON was real close to my dorm, and we would go play for about an hour or so almost every day. The real issue I have with playing basketball now is my eyesight. I have real weak frames and have to wear contacts to really play. When I have in my contacts, I can see okay out of them, but my vision is a bit crossed and I don't really see well enough to shoot. That is what I like about running, I don't have to see real well or even put in contacts to run on my indoor treadmill.
As a sport, basketball may be my favorite to watch. I grew up watching basketball and can really get into a game. Football is okay, but basketball is much more fun to watch for me. I didn't follow any pro teams growing up. The closest team was the pacers, but now I follow the cleveland cavaliers. I started following them when I meet vegasbob who is from cleveland in the dorms. I have gone to five or six games since then. It is great that the have the king now, but some of my favorite players were on the team before lebron got drafted. The last game I tried to go to, I didn't buy tickets ahead of time and ended up going on a bar crawl in cleveland. It was still fun, but cleveland is cold at the end of december so I had to really bundle up.
In high school I used to root for the UC bearcats all the time. Huggins usually had a good team, and I didn't really like the kentucky wildcats. By the time I got started at OSU, I became a fan of their team and have followed them since. They never really had any great teams while I was there. Oden and his crew played the season when I was teaching. I do like Thad as a coach, and was a bit disappointed when UC canned Huggins.
I am going to sign up for a fantasy basketball team this year. I like having a team, but really don't pore over stats very much. I just set my roster for about a week or two ahead of time so that I have a full slate of players every night. I don't think any team I have ever put together has finished in the top 5, and that is okay with me.
On another note, I have crossed the 550 calorie mark on my treadmill routine. I finally got my wii remote to point and display a hand at the screen, but agreed to a system update that should get me 500 free points for the virtual console. I really just wanted to check my weight on the wii board, but have been updating for a half hour now and only about halfway through the progress bar. Sometimes having satellite internet blows.

350
Today I ran my first 5K race in nine years. By pure coincedince, it has to be nearly nine years to the day. The last cross country race I ran was the week of the national convention for the regionals at lancaster high school. I went to the national FFA convention, convinced grandma and grandpa to come pick me up, and had them get me back to ohio so I could run for my team after we qualified for regionals. We qualified at regionals, largely thanks to me. I passed up two west union runners on the last hill at the district cc meet, and finished third on the team. This week was the national convention, but I am not sure about the regional meet date. It would seem that I added on about 9 minutes in the nine years since my last race. I finished in 28:04
At any rate, I wasn't really sure what to expect when I left this morning to go run. I was unsure about my fitness level and had two main thoughts. One, I wanted to be sure to finish. Two, I was hoping to be under thirty minutes. I accomplished both and felt pretty good about the event. I wasn't as tired as I thought I would be after the race. I didn't go especially hard either, only running a 28:04. This really just serves as a measuring stick for what I can improve on in the future. I would like to get under 25 by next race or event.
Statistically I finished 3/7 in my age group. I was hoping I might be able to win the age group, but am not terribly disappointed I didn't. I saw last years results and that no one in the 25-29 group ran. I finished 29th overall, and there were 52 runners overall. So I didn't finish in the top half, which was a bit disappointing. I was disheartened every time I saw what mile marker I was at. The first and second mile seemed real slow, but I was running a 9 minute pace. 6 women ran faster than me, and I finished right behind two of them. I do have something I would like to brag about. After the first half mile got settled in, I passed up about 5 people, and was never passed up by anyone. The last person I passed up turned the wrong way and got turned around real quick. I was gonna sprint ahead of him on the final stretch anyways. He finished 6 seconds behind me, so hooray me.
After the race, I went to dicks and bought some more running shorts and clothes. I had one good pair of shorts for running, and the rest were basketball shorts. I found that now that I sweat and burn about 500 calories every workout, I can't reuse shorts like I could when I first started out.
I am really looking forward to getting out and running again. I had fun racing today.

The neighborhood
I thought I would talk about some of my neighbors.
The first neighbor I want to talk about I really feel sorry for. Him and his wife used to own a restaurant in town, and sold it so they could retire. She died six months later and he now lives alone. They would have to be a really awful retirement in my opinion. Working your whole life so that you can retire and enjoy things with your wife, only to have her taken away in six months.
My other neighbor just became divorced from her husband. He let her have the house, but moved about 3/4 of a mile down the street. I would be really aggravated if I went through a divorce so the other half could move 3/4 of a mile down the street. If I was her, I would have sold the house and moved away. She has two kids that are in high school so maybe she is waiting on them to move along.
One neighbor and his wife own a ole mill store and seem very friendly. Last year they had a pig roast and had nearly the whole neighborhood over. It was a fun time.
Most of the other neighbors are non descript.
I also figured out how to add my twitter posts to my blog so that is something new.

a small revelation
Today I did something for the first time that could get me in jail or a big fine. I don't want to incriminate myself just yet, but I am considering taking a class with bobby hill for two reasons.
1. the class would legalize what I am refering to
2. Bobby Hill wants to take the class, and I would laugh at whatever it is he does when he is supposed to be paying attention.
In other news, I have recently gone through a bit of a lifestyle change. I have referenced it on this blog before, but spent some time thinking about it today, so here it goes. I once read that a girl was looking for a man who was religious, didn't drink and didn't party. Yes, this was a on a blog that was probably meant to be private to strangers. I decided that I was attending church services often enough, but really should cut out or elminate my drinking habits. I quit drinking for most of this spring and summer with about 3 occasions. I was sober for about four weeks when a friend ordered a beer and didn't want it. I was already paying for the meal, so I drank it and got back home. That was at the end of april. I didn't have another beer until the bunch of us were at gatlinburg for my grandparents wedding anniversary in the middle of june. Us grandkids were all hanging out in the hot tub and I had a beer with them. That was at least a six week break from the beer I had at the dinner, which broke a streak of at least four weeks. I remember dr. weber coming over one time this summer and telling him that I haven't drank any in a while, but ending up drinking three beers that night. I just can't quite remember when that was. I did drink to much at the fourth of july party, and again at my brother birthday party, but have been surprisingly sober.
I was thinking about because of what I might do saturday. If it rains tommorrow, I may go run in a 5K sponsored by my sisters college. Or I may go to columbus for the minnesota game and drink way too much. Hopefully I can catch up with some of my peers and not hang around my brothers fraternity broheims all day. I just wonder how I would explain that I don't drink much anymore when I am holding a beer and not looking sober at all. I may take bobby hill with me, he has been asking to go sometime and hang out on a college campus and see what that scene is about. I just need to get a couple of drinks in him and get him doing some auctioneer speak. That would be hilarious.
When my brothers got back from the tennessee trip, they saw my ex-girlfriend and asked her if she knew why I had quit drinking as much. They thought I was depressed or something, but a 20 year old and a 23 year old would wonder why someone would try to limit their drinking.

CHA CHING PART II
Well we got to my soybean fields today. Every truck I that leaves my field is about another 1500 in my account. Hopefully I can get enough sold by tommorrrow morning that I can delay price the rest. The good news is that the market went up about 25 cents today, so that is good for me. Tommorrow will be a bit stressful, we are going to try and beat a rain that is coming in thursday night, so we will be rushing a bunch.
In other news, I joined another dating site at the recommendation of a friend. The new site seems better than what I am used to in some regards, but the navigation is a bit confusing at for now. I also already seen another girl from the old site, excluding the recommending friend. But other girl was one of the first people I messaged from the old site, so I am all set to ignore and pursue other prospects.

Dipper
I never have gotten into dipping. I have tried it once and didn't think it was anything great. I seen an older relative of mine today put in a chew and just had to wonder what that does for people. Is that what I have to look forward to when I get older? Leaving the house and putting in a chew? Am I going to have to be do something to occupy my thoughts that I put a chew in to think about? When I was working construction I would buy a pack of gum everyday in a similar manner. Everyone else smoked, but I chewed gum. When working here at home I don't need a similar distraction.
I am pretty sure that plenty of people chewed or were using snus at PHS, and have heard it is a problem at WHS also. I just don't see the appeal of tobacco products anymore. Who or what is telling kids this is a good idea? Lip cancer may be more livable than lung cancer, but it is still cancer. And how are they getting this stuff? Dipping gets as much nicotine in your body as at least a pack of cigarettes, if not two packs.
I also watched the machinist last night and thought it was excellent. First 5 star ranked movie on netflix.

halloween costumery
I just read a good article about hooking up over on elev8.com. That site has some really good information and articles on there. I check the site everyday now just so I have something to read when sitting at the computer. Anyways, hooking up was never a thing I got to do. The only girls I ever kissed I went on to date. The only girls that kept me out of my bed I dated. I was really to much of a drunk for any girl to consider hooking up with me. Even drunk girls. Well, I did meet one girlfriend when I was loaded on whisky an nyohs one night. The other one started out as a blind date. At any rate, hooking up doesn't really appeal to me. I don't think that women are just there to be gotten. A short term gain has has limited appeal also.
I am also considering some halloween costumes. Last year my sister had a halloween party, and it was an okay time. I wanted to go as a member of team zissou, but got out voted by the other other half. She wanted to go as some type of scout combo, but gave up and went as farm boy and farm girl. One year I went as a member of slipknot with a bunch of friends. I can't really think of any other halloween events I went to. This year I may go as an ONU pharmacist and poke as much fun at that bunch of polar bears as possible. Im gonna borrow a lab coat and say that playing dr. mario was what inspired me to become a pharmacist. I'm also gonna say that I spend all day counting pills and goofing off on a blackberry. Should be a fun time.

finally
Well we finally got started with this years grain harvest. Hopefully we can get one of my fields done and sold soon so I can pay my insurance bill then start banking the rest. This year will be a bit different than last year. Last year all of my acres were split 50/50 with a landlord. This year about 30 acres I get to keep all for myself. But I do have to pay rent to the tune of $80/acre. I will have to wait and see how this is a benefit or detriment.
Ever since I have moved backed from columbus, we have had good luck during the harvest. This year, the ground is wet and we will be cutting up the fields more than we have the past year or three. We also have gotten started about three weeks later than usual.
I also seen where the wild things are this weekend. I didn't think the movie was that great, but I haven't read the book, so I may just be missing out.
I also feel bad. One of my mexicans wants a loan so he can send money back home for his dear old mom to buy some medicine. I told him no, we have had problems in the past with the guys waiting until the last week they are here to pay me back. He also needed about a month to pay me back 20 dollars, so a 100 bill is a bit much to "presar."
I may be off the hook from the ex girlfriend finally. She told me the other night that she found someone else. So she is gonna need less attention which is good for me. I can finally take down some of those pictures on the wall without here bellyaching much. I also won't be obligated to call here and bore myself until I can get off the phone with here. I can finally put away that book and letter she thought I should read every hour. This is also good news since I relapsed into the events of my perspicacity post. Those three times are gonna come back to get me somehow, I better be really good.
On the other hand, she did tell me that I am a great guy and I will find someone else. Now if I can just find that other person. I also didn't realize that this post's title would apply to both two events of this post.

BCS busted
I was just having a debate with a friend about the merits of a playoff system in college football. I am not in favor of this. To me the college football season is your playoff. If you want or deserve the chance to be a national champion, you have to do a couple of things. First, you should win your conference. Second, you have to win whatever BCS game you get placed in. Third your team has to play a respectable schedule. The smaller school teams that think they deserve the crystal football need to man up and make their conference respectable in the eyes of the nation. The big 10, pac 10, SEC, big east and big 12 have had outstanding teams in every decade of CFB. Those conferences have earned the right to send their champions to the marquee games. They understand how competitive you need to be to be the best. They understand its win or else you are out. These conferences are willing to take the risk of saying we have the best conference and play the best every weekend. If they don't perform, they lose the national respect that the audience looks for. Smaller schools don't have the national audience and pressure, nor the marquee athletes of the big timers.
I need to address how the playoff system works in other divisions of sports and not CFB. Basketball playoffs work because the turn around time for a basketball game is minimal. A team can get their act together and be ready to play again the next day. The recovery time for the athletes is quick because they don't get tackled and beat on each other for the entire game. If a basketball team is too physical, the player fouls out. Basketball players don't have to wear pads and helmets to play their games.
NFL playoffs work because they have home games. The athletes are paid for their performance. Also, when was the last time a NFL team got discounted after an early season loss. The season is not as competitive for NFL teams. They are so relaxed that they play four games that have no bearing on the end of the season. The NFL system is simply money hungry from my point of view, and should not be emulated.
Baseball playoff system is about like basketball. The players are contact free and can play the next day after a nights rest.
I don't think I would like a playoff system in CFB. A fan could appreciate the extra games, but how at what cost? As fans we would see NFL like gouging that I cannot afford. The allure of having a single game after your season is over to make the statement is part of the exhilaration of the bowl game. More games would diminish the regular season. In its current state, every weekend matters. If your team fails to play as expected or better every weekend, your team is out. Some close cases can occur where more than one team feels they have a claim to the crystal football. Should have played better earlier and been in a better conference if you wanted that acclaim. I like the system as it is, and am willing to accept whatever fate my team plays itself into.
I also have to mention the computer ranking system. Play good enough to be the best and take what you get. Don't like your rating? Change your schedule. Win all of your games convincingly.
With all this in mind, I fully expect the buckeyes to play in the outback bowl this year.
I also feel pretty good about myself. Thus far this football season, I have only drank 3 beers on saturdays. I wouldn't have drank those if it wasn't for being in columbus for an actual game.

feedback
This week I had the chance for some honest feedback about my work as a substitute. Every once in a while, a principal will tell me I am doing a good job. That doesn't count for much though since the principal just wants to keep troublemakers out of their office. As long as I do that, the boss is happy. Sometimes I will hear from the teacher in the school, but I don't know if how much faith I can put in those comments. The teacher seems to edit their comments in favor of not being heard by their peers or putting off the sub. One time I heard some feedback from some students the day after I was in a class. The regular teacher asked the class how the sub did, and they said I stayed in at the teachers desk the whole time. This was true, but I did realize that the teacher asks the students their opinion.
The real feedback I started this post about was very useful. I now realize that I need to change my board drawing philosophy. That format is very easy for kids to get away with things they shouldn't be doing. Usually kids will ask if they can listen to their mp3 players right away, but I don't usually suggest that. I also found out that being a sub is more appreciated than I thought. This person was thanking me as if I was unusually burdened by their wanting of a day off.
I really just try to get in the room and decipher what was left as soon as I can so I can get a hold on what should happen that day. I usually have to read what was left 3 or 4 times before I get a good grasp on what to do. I try not to hang around and do much socializing in the mornings.
In other news, the boredom in me has me looking up concerts, shows and movies to see, most of which I will go by myself. I also hope I can get away next saturday morning to run a 5-k. I am looking forward to that. I am probably going to go see where the wild things are tomorrow at a matinee showing just so I can see it and hopefully avoid anybody that recognizes me.

crunch berries
Am I the only person who eats captain crunch berry cereal by eating the crunches first, then eating all the berries last? That is my favorite way to eat this cereal. Sometimes I get bored and eat the berries first and then eat the crunch parts.
When I moved to the house I am in now, I left all my dishes and silverware behind. I wanted to have a limited number of dishes that forced me to wash the dishes when I ran out. I have four bowls, plates, forks, spoons, and knives. When I have used up all those, I have to do the dishes. If I had more randomized dishes, I could get away for to long without doing any dishes and didn't want to do so. Now that I have learned some more egg recipes, I can still fix breakfast after I use my four bowls. I also realized that I can use cups as mixing bowls instead of the same measuring cup all the time.
I also have a beef that I want to talk about. While I appreciate much of the fandom directed towards buckeye nation, there is something that annoys me. I have some friends that didn't go to ohio state, yet they still manage to act like they are the biggest buckeye fans ever. Most of said people go or went to shawnee state, so they have no football team to root for. I have the opinion that you should only be a fan of the schools that you went to. To me, being a buckeye was important enough that I made it happen. I am proud of what I accomplished and the fine company I can count myself in. People who committed their time to other schools shouldn't get to be as proud as a real buckeye collegian. Being a bandwagon fan is not an honest thing to do in my opinion. Everyone should be like andy bernard and brag about their school as if it were the best ever. I roll my eyes at most of the people on facebook who proclaim their favor with the buckeyes, but went to another school. I have also noticed the enthusiasm has dropped since the USC game. That day, everyone had something about OSU in their status, but last weekend there were barely any OSU references. What gives folks? Can you only get excited for the big games? Winning against a hyped non conference opponent doesn't get you a BCS game, winning the big ten is the only guarantee, and Tressel know that.
If I had gone to another school, I would feel weird wearing buckeye garb. I honestly did not get all the fandom before I started attending classes at OSU. Until then, OSU was just the place to be if I wanted to learn about ag. The other schools in ohio didn't offer as good as a program as OSU. If I hadn't decided on agriculture as a profession, I would have gone to some plain school that nobody gets excited about. I don't even know what I would have majored in. Well, now I know that I would major in science education, but at that point knew I was smart enough for college, but didn't know what to study.

2 samuel
I finished reading 2 samuel just a while ago. While this book has just as much turmoil and strife as the past chapters, I did enjoy much of it. I enjoyed the telling of the interactions of between people and how situations were dealt with. Largely though, this is going to be similar to how I read other great works. I will read it the first time and retain little. The second and third read-throughs will be what really enhances my comprehension.
I have been doing maybe to much thinking lately. The other day I was watching the trya banks show and had to wonder how I stand in the eyes of women. The theme of the show was an apparent cheating gene that men and women may have. I found it hard to believe that people that are known cheaters can have women that want to be with them. I must be in the entirely wrong part of anywhere that I can't get a date or find a woman. I have never cheated or think I could do that to someone. However, known cheaters are willing to go on tv and admit their fallacy with a woman that will go through that.
I also have to wonder about my okcupid habits. I rarely have any women look at my profile. The only ones that do are ones that I have already looked at on my own accord. I think this may be due to some of my own looks. With the quiver feature, I have rejected over 340 women. I have accepted about 50. Most of the ones I have attempted to communicate with don't really seem to be as easy going and interested as they like to say they are. However, most of my rejections have come after only looking at a quick profile and deciding that I am uninterested. I make many rejections based on if the woman has a kid or if they seem overweight. Perhaps many women reject me from whatever basis they have. I have to wonder if I accepted or messaged more often, if I would get more of a response. Should I lower my percieved standards in the hopes of finding someone? Am I ignored because of how much I ignore others on that site? I have to wonder about what some women are expecting on that site. It is not called okfriendmaker, it is called okcupid, in reference to cupid being a bringer of love in the valentine sense.
I have been able to get some generalized feedback about the site. A friend told me that she thinks there is nothing on there. I wasn't sure if that applied to me or not, but from a known perspective the site is lacking in quality men. This doesn't seem to do me any favors, so I must really be low on any ranking.

cellular phones
I managed to get along with out a cell phone up until I turned 21. I decided to get a nextel because my cousin had one and it seemed pretty cool. My dad and grandpa now both have one and I think I may be more committed to nextel than an actual contract now. I like the walkie talkie feature, but only use it to talk to my dad and grandpa. Sometimes I beep my uncle, but that is mostly when I need some work done on my house. My dad and grandpa converted after it was decided that my grandpas phone could not ring loud enough for him to answer. They felt the walkie talkie system could be a good thing for the farm, and by and large it has. We can get ahold of each other to make sure that the right thing is being done or check in to see if anything needs picked up while the other is at the store. My grandpa can negotiate the walkie-talkie aspect, but has a hard time making actual phone calls. My dad on the other hand talks all the time and then wonders why his bill is high after going over his minutes. My grandpa has trouble keeping his phone in working order, but doesn't want to pay for phone insurance.
I would like to move on to an iPhone, but I don't think the 3g system would work very well out here. I don't see the point if the unlimited data was very limited. A blackberry would be nice, but at this point I really have to use a military grade phone that can take some abuse from dust and dirt and falling to the ground. I still use the belt clip on my phone and walk around like a big hick. If the phone fit into my pocket easily enough I would put my phone in my pocket.
I also rarely text message. With my current plan, texts cost 20 or 25 cents per message. I usually just call my mom when she sends me a message. I would message more, but the shorthand developed from that is just very odd to me. Plus, I would need some motivation from the womenfolk. I could rationalize spending money on a text for a lady, but would just call up and talk to dudes right away.
Right now I have about 6 months left on my current contract. My dad and grandpa just renewed their contracts for two more years. I am not sure if I will get another nextel or not when that time comes.

My first beer
I never had a sip of alcohol until after I graduated high school. I was home alone one night, and was cooking my own dinner. My curiousity finally got the best of me, and I decided that I was going to try a beer with my dinner that night. I took one of my dads busch lights out of the refrigerator, and hurried to my room before some one seen me. I had a couple of sips, and ate my dinner. Honestly I didn't finish half the beer that night. The taste wasn't that good. In the morning, I snuck the beer outside and poured out the rest on the ground. I didn't have another beer until I was 19 at the county fair.
I was real worried after I drank the beer because of what I remembered I had to do the next morning. I had a dentist appointment, and I had to drive everyone else that morning. I was not aware of the effects a beer would have on me. I thought the dentist might be able to tell, so I brushed my teeth thoroughly. I was also very unsure about how it would affect my driving. I had just gotten my explorer a week or so before and was not entirely comfortable driving a 5 speed. I turned out okay on both fronts, but thats the way it was.
Part of my disinterest until that point had been my parents. I think my dad may have been drunk once up to that point, but he did usually have beer in the refrigerator. He drank several beers one night when a big rainstorm came up and nearly killed some of the crops. I can't think of my mom ever drinking much at all, especially more than one beer.
The first time I approached drunk was after I turned 20 and up in columbus. I was in the dorm with a cousin, and his girlfriend took us to a party. I drank a six pack of bud light and fell over on the way home. I also slept late and missed the homecoming parade for the football game. The next time I got drunk was off of vodka, and I threw up over some of the dorm room. My cousin convinced me that setting a popsicle in a vodka-kool aid drink would be a good idea. So we watched fight club and I got drunk.
In a related story, I finally surpassed the 2 mile and 500 calorie mark on my treadmill routine. I have lost some weight to the outside of where my abs would be, but have plenty of room for improvement. It is like I have little dimples in that spot now. One of the amigos was very interested in what I use the machine for, as he saw that I was getting ready and watched me the whole 28 minutes.

nails in the coffin
I did something sunday that I wished I hadn't done. I practically ran over one of our family dogs. The dog is still alive, but its hard to say how much more time jasmine has. Here is some background on jasmine. I would estimate her age to be at least 15 years. She is deaf and was for all purposes hobbled before sunday. Her teeth are too dull to chew anything really solid and she had some type of blisterous sores on her back feet anyways.
Part of the problem is my attitude about everyone else's parking policy. Dad and grandpa park so that the whole lot is bottlenecked and I protest silently thus far by parking where other people can negotiate the parking lot. I was trying to get to my usual spot and jasmine was laying in the way. I pulled up to where she was laying, beeped the horn, waited five or six seconds then meandered up in my truck. I got up to her, heard some yelping, then backed away from where she was. So far she hasn't been walking around on her back legs, but she has been able to stand on her back two legs. She doesn't move but she can stand. She was pretty old anyways, but I do feel bad about speeding up her inevitable death.
I have thought about some other concerts I may go to by myself given the chance. I would go see weezer, foo fighters, the killers, and the silversun pickups now given the chance. I may edit this list later, but for now this is an adequate preliminary.
I also had a weird dream last night. I was staying at a friends place in columbus. She talked me into this by asking if I was staying another day for some other party the next day. I remember staying on her couch and shooting ballons outside of her window with a bow and arrow.

crashes and cars
I have been fortunate enough to have never been in a serious car accident. The first accident that I was ever in was when I was 16 years old. I went to eastgate and a car pulled out in front of me and I hit their door. My 87 cavalier turned out okay, but her car needed some work done.
I also had one wreck in my 92 explorer. I was a chaperone at a 4-H overnighter and had been awake for about 30 hours on my way back home. I had my youngest brother and sister in my car and two of their friends. I was driving north on 68 before the rest home. I fell asleep, hit a guard rail, and woke up. Everyone else in the car was asleep, but we all woke up pretty quick. Luckily, I hit a guard rail and woke back up pretty quickly, kept driving, and had enough adrenaline to get me home without another problem. My grandma said my guardian angel was definitely watching me that morning.
I once wrecked my sisters car when I was a junior in high school. I was going to school early to cook for teachers appreciation day during FFA week. I saw one deer go by me, and then I hit the one right behind it. Luckily, the deer was in mid jump and only hit the windshield. I stopped, seen that I couldn't see out to drive and waited a while for something to happen. I decided that I needed to call someone so I jogged to the closest house and called home to let them know. Some of my friends going by seen my car there and the news got to the school. My sister was a bit mad because I wrecked her car and she couldn't drive it for a while after that. I also spent most of that day picking glass shards out of my shoes. I hadn't tied them yet and some broken glass fell in them.
I never have wrecked my truck yet, but I did get it impossibly stuck one.

Only by the night
I made it back home from a concert by myself tonight. The concert in topic is Kings of Leon at rupp arena. The opening band was called white lies and I thought they were okay. They played only one or two songs that I liked, and only for about 45 minutes.
The headliner came out and started with closer and played crawl next. The did play some songs that weren't from the album I have, but played everything from only the night except for 17. That was fine by me, I don't really care for the pedophilistic undertones in that song. They originally finished with cold desert, but for the encore they came out and played five more songs, finishing with be somebody. The singer was pretty cool, he was saying they have been touring for a long time and were excited about getting back to tenneessee to sleep in their own beds. He did say that they are going to be working on a new album sometime in the future.
I did get pwned at the concert though. I think I may have bought a woman's shirt by mistake. I picked one out and thought it looked pretty cool, but after I paid for it and walked away, I noticed it had some really short sleeves and was smaller than a usual mens large. It also has a bit of a v-neck to it also. I ended up buying another t-shirt and spending 65 dollars on that deal.
I would also like to say that this is by far the best concert I have ever been to. The only other concerts I decided to go to were cKy concerts, and they were good also. I have also been to a jackson browne concert, a john cougar melloncamp concert, and a def leppard concert, and a craig morgan concert. Those would fall under the bored/nothing better to do category.

Samuel I
Well, I finally finished another chapter of the Bible last night. Early civilization was much more tumultuous than I ever realized. Armies of hundreds or thousands are assembled quickly and move about easily somehow. I did like reading about the some of the leaders though. I had always thought that David was only the person who beat down Goliath. I hadn't realized that he became the leader in the Israelites eyes and was hounded by the former leader Saul. I am not so sure why the people were se needy of a figurehead among them. Were they trying to be competitive with the other groups who had a king? Did they need someone to direct their issues to? I have not quite decided why a person was needed to lead a group that should be depending on God for their decisions.
I am also going to a concert by myself tonight. Like Michael Scott told Toby Flenderson, I might as well get used to being alone.

Community
With the recently new show about community college, I want to talk about my community college experience. I thought there were some good teachers at sscc, but overall I was dissatisfied with the experience. There were too many high school students there doing the PSO program. I didn't think the classes were challenging enough. I made a good effort to study, and carried a 3.5 when I was there, but didn't think things were hard enough.
I really liked one of the teachers I had there. My english I and II teacher was excellent and I recommend her to everyone that I hear is going there. The history teacher I had there was good also, and the math teacher I liked also. Most of the other staff did not really impress upon me that much. The chemistry teacher I had there was okay, but I think the other person they had doing chemistry was better.
I finally decided that I should be expecting more from my college life, and was getting what I payed for at sscc. I knew that I was going to start at OSU for my sophomore year and took some what turned out to be junk classes at sscc. This kind of came back to get me. I ended up staying at OSU an extra quarter to get in all the classes that I needed to graduate. If I had planned or done things better, I might have graduated on time. But then I wouldn't have been at OSU when I was and had what might have been the best year of my life. I didn't have a job lined up for when I should have graduated so the only thing I was out was the whatever money I spent. I had enough scholarship to pay for the year so that wasn't an issue.
Part of my beef with the local community college is the PSO program. The schools need to be more authoritative about what classes the students are taking. I think the students are signing up for to many cake classes from the easy teachers. The high schools should mandate which classes and teacher the students are taking.

Barn is a letter and a number, A-1!!!
I had a job at one time that I really liked. That was building pole barns for the A-1 building company. I started the job a couple of days before I turned 19. I was working at home with dad and grandpa and not making enough money. I asked my relative, who is nicknamed A-1, if I could work for him building pole barns. He eventually took me on and I was making $8/hour before I knew it. Since I was soon to be attending SSCC, I was able to work on fridays and weekends when I wanted after school started. I was really awful doing construction at first. I could barely swing a hammer the correct way. I worked mostly during the summers, except for the summer of 2004. I didn't work then because my two younger brothers went to Germany for a week or three and I had to stay home to help on the farm. The last summer I worked for them, I was 23 and left when I started for college that year.
One time I cut my leg with a chainsaw and had to get stitches. I was cutting off the pole tops and a pole top fell and hit the blade and kicked the blade at my leg. I bled a bit and got it wrapped it up in some gauze. When I got home, no one was home. I went to my grandmas and showed it to her. She thought I should get stitches so I did. By the time I got home, everyone was back and my brother was having a farewell party for someone leaving for the marines. I got to tell people that I had a bad day because I cut my leg with a chainsaw.
I also grew my afro the summer I turned 21 and was working. I had to wear a visor to keep the hair out of my face. One of the guys we were building for thought this was pretty funny. We were building a barn clear out by columbus and I drove almost every morning. I can practically make that drive in my sleep now, since I nearly did for almost a month and a half.
I did really struggle learning how to swing a hammer for a while. I finally did get better. I would still smash my finger everyonce in a while though.
I also think that the worst thing possible could have happened on the hottest day possible happened to me once. I was swinging trusses at the BCR in georgetown one day. Right before lunch, I was at the peak nailing in a 2x4 for the peak, and as hot as a person could reasonably be. Then it happened. A water main broke and I was forced to watch cool refreshing water shoot up from the ground while I was 30 feet off of the ground and carrying around 40 extra pounds of nails in my tool bag. It was really demoralizing at the time. By the time I got to the ground and off of the trusses, I couldn't get away from the water cooler. I would stand there and drink a bottle, my boss would come and give me something to do. I would hurry and do that, then get right back to the water. I couldn't hardly stop drinking water that day.
I do really miss the work though. Being part of a crew and seeing the barns we built come along and be constructed was pretty cool. I stayed skinny, and was pretty tan. I was finally making $10/hour the last summer I worked. If it wasn't for the long hours we worked, I would go back and work for them again. I sometimes don't see the crew trucks come by my house until after 7. I was getting a little bit over one hundred hours in every two weeks when I was working last. Some of the people I worked with were not that great though. The type of work didn't demand a bunch of attention. Someone who wanted to be on drugs was usually on drugs at that job. Either that or soon after or absent a couple of days a month. I was happy having a beer or two on the way home and chewing gum the rest of the day.
In other news, I found a really cool website. It is called elev8.com and I recommend reading it.

school thoughts
I thought I would take some time to talk about being a teacher wannabe/schools in this post.
I can think of one or two times that I have gotten sick to my stomach before a class came in. Once was when I had a large class and didn't know what I was going to do with them that day. I was tired of forcing a study guide down their throats, and didn't have an activity that I wanted to do. I don't remember what I did during that period, but I managed to get through it. The other time was when I had some girls in a class that were fed up with being in a class they weren't doing well in. The group started bringing in books for other classes and doing other work or reading magazines during class. I was always glad when that class was out the door that day. That chem class got so bad that my younger sister got so fed up she switched classes so she wouldn't have to listen to the other group of girls.
I somehow have a class of 8 kids at PHS that is quantifiably worse. The auxillary buidling I am in gives them a reason to leave early and get in late as they are farther from the main building. I also have two bathrooms in that building. Everyone wants to get in there three or four minutes after the bell rings and then wants to dick around going to the bathroom and getting drinks from the water fountain. I made a rule that they can't use the bathroom five minutes after the bell rings, but one jerk gets in there before everyone else and burns up their time. I have lunch duty with all of that class in it, so I am going to put on a matriarchal hat and start bitching at them to use the bathroom on their lunch time. This class is going to get the hammer on them when the regular teacher gets back. Her half sister is a TA and has been giving steady reports about the class since I have been in there. They have been rude and deserve less attention than what I have been giving them. I prefer to think that students are inquisitive and have plenty of questions about their teachers and what kind of decisions they may make in the future. I can't refuse their every concern and want.
I also seem to agree with the presidents decision that schools are in session more than they are now. These kids need more time in school learning skills and academic subjects. The teachers are gonna whine, but get out if you don't like it. Students today seem to think they are privileged for some reason. Too many of them can't spell. Too many of them can't read or write in cursive. Too many of them can't type of use a computer for any thing beyond copy and paste. Too many of them are just putting in their hours until they can leave. If they knew that didn't have as much time off, how would they act in class? The current school schedule is based largely on a "agarian" schedule, which favors families that depend on kids for their farm activities. This is entirely unneeded in todays society. We should have our students in school more and expect more of them. I think a tremendous shift needs to happen in our school systems. This has more to do with the teacher than the student. The teachers I see today are using an uninspiring curricula. They need to push themselves to engage all students everyday. I know the system that I would like to try, but would need more time and control to fine tune what and how I think should be done. Maybe I am too much of an idealist and am way out of line.
Like usual, I watch and see how many left handed students I have. I don't have many at PHS. I was amazed one day at the no slowdown school. I had a class that was over half lefties. I had one whole table that was all left handed. I couldn't hardly believe it.
I also like to let kids talk for my own entertainment. I have been taking some notes on one kid since last week. The interesting bits are as follows
-only thinks about hunting
-can't do anything without listening to music
-wears a pirated theme shirt 2/3 days
-wears fishing shirt the rest of the time
Another boy who has a growing list of AKA names has recently declared that he always rest his head on his hand in a way that hides his headphones from view. I am keeping closer tabs on him now.
In other news, this should be a fun weekend. I am either going to be farming and getting my crops out of the field, or going to a concert at rupp arena by myself. Yeah me. I am excited about going to the concert, I have been listening to my kings of leon music way to much.

lack of QT.
I caught some serious heat from nasamatt the other day. It was part of the reason I was willing to go to cincy and pal around with drweber. Nasamatt couldn't believe that I could sit around here and not have women on my mind all the time. He thought I should be stir crazy from not being around women and looking at them all the time. Spending all the time I did in columbus where I could see women around from my front porch is very different than here in brown county. I don't have the same oppurtunities here in southern ohio. I could go to some local bars and try to meet women. I don't want to start a trend that could get me a DUI though. I could go to columbus or cincinnati all I wanted, but don't have a strong group of friends that are willing to put up with me. Bars are to loud and noisy to try and really talk to women. I tend to be more of a wallflower at bars and drink to much. That doesn't win me many looks. Most of the girls I socialized with in columbus were from columbus and pretty well unwilling to come be known with me as a country boy. I didn't mention my online dating status to him, but drweber does know some info about it.
Keep in mind that my dating philosophy is a bit different than nasamatt's. He was just as hapless as me when we lived together at age 23. He finally found a girl after I moved out and has been dating her ever since then. That means he has been dating her for the better part of three years now. I would think that if I could stand a girl long enough to date her for that amount of time, I would have at least proposed. For the record, nasamatts girlfriend is a great girl and they seem happy together. I don't know about there situation beyond what I have said here. However, you ought to hear him when he gets in the company of some other men. Every woman on the tv gets a running commentary about her looks.
Part of the reason I broke up with my last girlfriend wast the amount of time we spent together. I am under the belief that I should be able to date someone for a year and know if I am in love with them or not. I don't see the point of only dating someone for three to four years. I didn't think I was in love with the last one when we broke up. I couldn't be with someone who I didn't think was going to be the one for me. I am not angry at her, but that is how I am going to approach a relationship. Sure it was tough to call it off, but I was beginning to think I was wasting my time continuing a romantic relationship. She seemed to think so also, as she was trying less at being with me.

Hats
I used to love wearing hats. I had a hat on all the time until I was about 22 I think. I have such a unusually weird shaped head, that most hats don't fit me right. The last fitted hat I bought was a 7 and 7/8 and it doesn't fit right. Adjustable caps are to small to fit right either. I adjust them to the last two places, and they don't sit how I like. Now I only wear hats when I am working or at a reds game. I usually resort to wearing head bands now when I would like something on my head. I think my favorite hat that I ever had was a red fitted OSU hat. I bought the hat my first year of college and wore it until I lost it at my parents somewhere. I found it a year or two ago, but it had mildewed up and became generally unwearable. The odd thing is that it is a fitted 7 and 1/2 hat, and it fit well when I bought it as a 19 year old. I also had a visor that I wore when I was working construction and growing an afro. I have another visor that I like to wear, but it is an A & F visor, and I feel like a bit of a pompous jerk when I wear clothes that have manufactor's names all over them. I did buy a fisherman/gilligan OSU hat lat year, but it is a touch small and doesn't fit right either.
I also had someone search for my exact blog that lives in california. I wonder why.

no dirty dancer
It is easy for me to admit that I am not much of a dancer. Ideally, I would learn to do the head bob dance like the fellas in the snl roxbury skits. Just stand and do a head bob. However, I can't even get that right and and off rhythm in a matter of seconds.
I was thinking about this because I was attempting to dance last night. Drweber aksed if I wanted to come to a UC grad school mixer, and I said YES, since I am a bit of a yes man. I should have stayed home and graded papers, but went anyways. I was reminded of why I started to dislike bars and associated scenes lat night. The music was a continuos mix of song bits with no beginning or end. It took about 25 minutes to get our first drink. The music was too loud to try and talk to anyone. There was also dancing. I don't dislike dancing, but just feel odd and out of place attempting it. I could maybe be an acceptable dancer if I had the right motivation, but don't right now. I did manage to get down 11 beers and a shot of tequila last night. Doing shots does something with my head. For the longest time I would psyche myself out or something and throw up after about every shot I took. Lucky for me, the tequila was the first thing we did at the bar and I didn't have to do any more. I kept it down okay.

Hunting
I have yet to get into the right frame of mind to want to do any type of game hunting. For starters, I have to get out of bed especially early. The weather is also generally cold and often rainy this time of year. Thats two strikes right there. I spend enough time outside when needed, I enjoy my time inside when possible. I have enough beef from a cow we butchered that I don't want or have any room for any more meat. I wouldn't want any more to eat. I also don't think I can get myself to shoot at another animal. Killing for sport does not appeal to me. I also don't think I can shoot straight enough to actually hit anything. My eyesight is very horrible to be able to do that.
Some of my friends from college are visiting this weekend to do some hunting. They are both from the cleveland area, and love having this much acreage to walk around and be outside. Once they realized I was from brown county and what kind of numbers brown county got during hunting season, they couldn't wait to come down to visit. Neither of them has had much luck hunting down here. NasaMatt got a doe one year, but drweber has not been able to get anything. Usually it rains and the game doesn't move much when they are out. NasaMatt has brought his dad down here before to go hunting with him also.
I really don't get all the high school aged people who say they love hunting. Sure, it may get them out of school for a day or two. I find their enthusiasm for something they get to only do once or twice a year a bit odd. I laugh a bit inside when those kids talk about hunting or going out and scout the woods.
