my resignation

Well today was a pretty good day. I got some work done on my prospectus, heard some encouraging news about crop insuracne and had a good dinner. I didn't do anything in the greenhouse, but things have been relatively slow for the first part of the season here.

In other news, I heard some less than good news from a friend today. The news casued me to reflect on the only real job I ever had that I lost. About this time three years ago I was called into a principals office to be told I wasn't working there next year. At the time I was 24, and the principal and building rep thought I was much to young to get hung up and not think I wouldn't work again. He told me that he spent a couple of nights aganizing over the decision, but finally had to do what was best for the school. I can't fault him to much though, that was part of what they pay him for. I could have done a better job and kept my position, but I had a couple of things stacked against me. First, my licensure was in agricultural education. I can work in such a capacity teaching out of my license area, but only for a limited time. I was working on my progress in that area, but here I am at 27 and really having to push to finish up. Secondly, they were worried about losing students to the PSO program. That is an epic fail and part of the problem schools are facing today. More on that later. Thirdly, they had a replacement in mind when they were getting rid of me. They had me turn in a letter of resignation and then sign it so I couldn't rescind it when I found out who they were hiring to replace me. Then that friday I went to columbus and got drunk. The next week I told my grandma that I wasn't getting re hired and she told me that when one door shuts another opens.

In other news, I believe schools are letting to many students do PSO. With fewer students around, they don't need as many teachers. If all the students who are willing to work and get A's and B's go to school somewhere else, the C and lower students are left to wait out their time until they can graduate. So if a school has 20-30 less students, that is the salary or at least two teachers. (Count week gives 5 grand per student.) This means they need fewer CP teachers and subjects. And when a school has to look to cut money, those subjects may go. I am going to be doing an independent survey and findind out how many PSO kids are out of schools soon.
