Surprise!

Today we got a surprise visit from a the federal government. The department of wages and labor stopped in to see how we were complying with the h2a program rules. It turns out, we had the BEST operation they have seen in their careers. My grandma keeps excellent records of what and how we have paid our amigos. We also had minor infractions about their housing, but got them fixed by the end of the day. Hooray us. There was one other time we have received surprise regulation. A fellow stopped in our greenhouse one spring day in 2007 to see if we were illegally propagating plants and violating patents. We weren't and the guy said my grandma does have to be careful about how she does some things.

I went to college and took horticulture classes because I enjoyed working in a greenhouse and knowing about plants. I would likely be able to take over the greenhouse and its finances, but running a business just does not interest me. I like having a boss that gives me daily goals. Being in charge of myself is not my best personality. The greenhouse makes over 15 grand each season in profit, but I am just not to sure about it. That would be a nice chunk of change, but it mainly works because of the women in our family. My grandma puts almost too many hours in, my mom spends a couple of hours a day in the front once we are open, and my aunt comes as often as she can also. Once the ground get dry enough, Dad, Grandpa and me are out running tractors getting the crops ready.

In other news, there must be some warning about treadmills I have not heeded. I went out and bought a treadmill today. When I plugged it in, the lights flickered in the room, then went out. I must have destroyed some of the wiring, because now the lights don't work in that room, upstairs, the basement, or the socket that I plugged the treadmill in. I will have to give my uncle a call to see what advice he has now.
