reality competitions.

Some reality competition shows are extremely popular. I have never devoted to much time to watching them for reasons I have recently been able to verbalize. American Idol may be the most prevalent example of my reason. I don't quite like how someone can win a tv contest and be considered a star. They diminish the accomplishments of other artists. Any idiot can go on tv and hope for the best. The musicians of the past had to stick their neck out and get on stage until their act was good enough for them to be popular. It had to have been hard work to get a group together and practice, only to get on stage and not make very much money. Making the effort to say, this is what I am going to do, and screw anybody who doesn't support me is a very huge risk. Being willing to go on tv and get laughed at is a fickle thing. A real artist commits to doing their craft until they sink or swim. I think the audience you are trying to entertain should be in the same building. Having a fan base who can vote with their phone doesn't seem right to me. Sure, some good singers have come out of american idol, but how many of them would have been willing to try putting themselves on the line if there was no such show? Would they have gotten up on stage if they knew they might not "win" a contract? Were they singing for audiences without the appeal of immediate national fame?

This may not apply to some reality shows. The dancing shows have people with real skills who were doing what they love anyways. Promoting their industry by taking an untrained partner is not a huge risk on their end.

I also don't get the appeal of people who watch so they can hear the judges potentially mean comments. Is that all it really takes to entertain you? People saying mean things to someone else?

I have never watched many such shows for the above reasons. With the right motivation I may be able to watch, but currently don't.
